A mantra is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words thought to have magical or spiritual powers. They have been used for thousands of years and are believed to have existed before verbal word! Various religions use mantras as a way of engaging in prayer/connecting with the Divine and to engage in self-healing.
Listening to and/or reciting mantras regulates blood pressure, heart rate, brain waves, and adrenaline level. Specific chants can be used for specific purposes (i.e. reduce stress, pain, anxiety).
Typical meditation can be difficult, mantras help us to focus.
